Course DescriptionThe course illustrates how contemporary architecture and a listed archeological site have been blended to create a museum on a visually impactful site: a wooded hill near the ruins of an ancient castle north of Tokyo. The project examined is an exemplar of how careful architectural design and the use of a natural material like stone can create a functionally efficient building that blends effortlessly with its natural surrounds.
Course material includes an introductory text, many photographs, and technical and construction-detail drawings with accompanying legend.
On completing the course, you will be able to discuss the importance of site and the use of traditional materials, with particular focus on stone and its suitability for use with other materials.
Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
- Describe the program’s spatial distribution in relation to the building’s designated functions.
- Explain designer strategy to provide sufficient light to the inner environments.
- Explain the reason behind the architect’s choice of materials.
