Course DescriptionThe course looks at an iconic contemporary architecture wedged into a medieval urban fabric of an historic European city. Focus is given to the way in which design and the appropriate choice of high-performance materials can generate a landmark building that both meets the designated functions and blends into its setting. Course material includes an introductory text, many photographs of the worksite and scale models, 3D modeling and technical drawings. On completing the course, you will be able to explain the importance of employing vernacular materials, especially wood, in an historic setting.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
- Explain the strategies adopted to obtain an esthetic that blends form and color with the
building’s historic setting. - Analyze the cultural backdrop against which this building rises.
- Explain the program’s spatial distribution and the reason why the particular materials were employed.
- Analyze the forward-looking and traditional elements the architecture successfully blends
