Course Description
The course compares two projects by the same architect that, although physically close, are at opposite ends of the residential spectrum: an affluent private home, and accommodation for the homeless. Both programs demonstrate the same design strategy, however, delivering excellence in both cases. Course material includes an explanatory text, photographs and several technical and construction-detail drawings. These provide the reader with exhaustive information on the projects, technologies and materials employed on these innovative contemporary-living structures.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:

  1. Analyze the structural and finishing materials use internally and externally and describe in what way they are best suited for the particular location.
  2. Assess how the architect uses form to create a sense of movement, devising innovative elements that enhance the use of space.
  3. Define the way natural light is exploited by the geometrical forms of both programs.
  4. Identify the innovative technologies used to deliver a new idea of what are livable spaces.
