Course DescriptionThe course illustrates a public building project for users with special needs: residential sheltered housing for the elderly. Particular focus is given to the design strategies adopted to meet the detailed special requirements of the target occupants. Course material includes an introductory text, technical and construction-detail drawings with legend, and many photographs. On completing the course, you will be able to assess the project and the technologies and materials used.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
- Describe the spatial distribution strategy as a function of the special requirements of the occupants.
- Discuss the design decisions taken by the architects to deliver the functional performance required
- Analyze the materials used for frame, infills and sun-screening with particular focus on occupant comfort and more general issues of livable environments.
- Explain the specific features of the architectural program that allow this residential complex to blend with the surrounding urban fabric.
