Course Description
The course illustrates an environment-friendly tourist resort in the Tunisian desert, examining how contemporary architecture can meet the comfort demands of a tourist elite but at the same time comply with sustainability criteria by using locally-sourced materials and finishes that blend seamlessly with the environment. Course material includes an introductory text, photographs, and technical drawings providing detailed information on the technologies and materials used.

Learning Objectives
After reading this article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:

  1. Describe how the project’s spatial distribution meets the designated functional requirements.
  2. Explain the operational decisions taken by the architects to ensure interiors meet the functional requirements of the brief.
  3. Explain how both structural frame and exterior and interior finishes contribute to occupant comfort and at the same time help to ensure an environmentally sustainable building.
  4. Analyze how the particular architectural design and choice of natural, locally-sourced materials allow the complex to become an unobtrusive part of its natural setting.
