Course DescriptionThe course provides information on how a contemporary architecture can be made to blend effortlessly into its natural landscape, and how a house complying with modern living requirements may become a successful addition to a traditional tourist resort, in this case, a small Japanese town in the Prefecture of Nagano not far from Tokyo.
The course material includes many pictures, technical and construction-detail drawings with legends, and a descriptive text providing in-depth information on the overall project and the technologies and materials used.
On completing the course, you will be able to discuss how a contemporary architecture reinstates a close relationship between indoors and out, between a man-made artifact and its natural setting.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
- Analyze whether the project includes new functions not contemplated by conventional houses and how these have been designed into the building.
- Describe how the house fits into its natural setting, with particular focus on how it conforms to the lay of the land.
- Analyze the way interiors and exteriors interrelate.
- How natural materials have been used to blend a man-made architecture and its natural setting.
