Course DescriptionThe course deals with a contemporary house, focusing, among other things, on the importance during the design stage of dialogue between client and architect to ensure mutual understanding of the architectural brief in terms of occupant comfort, livable spaces and environmental safeguard. The house in question is located in a wooded area north of Toronto. Course material includes an introductory text, many pictures, and technical and construction-detail drawings with accompanying legend. On completing the course, you will be able to describe how the contemporary-living features characterizing the building have been designed with long-term livability in mind.
Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
- Analyze the importance of communication between client and architect and the extent of interdisciplinary collaboration required among technical specialties to achieve a functionally efficient architecture.
- Describe the program strategies adopted to ensure the architecture fits harmoniously into its spectacular natural setting, and explain how the space occupied by the pre-existing building has been used to create a new, more environment-friendly architecture.
- Describe how the architectural program has successfully combined design, art, music and mathematics.
- Explain the way in which the use of materials has been tailored to the design features.
