Course Description
The course provides information on an important project - located in Milan’s Malaspina Business Park - that combines avant-garde architecture and energy-efficient technologies. Along with the explanatory text, you will be given many pictures, a series of technical drawings, sketches, a detail drawing of the construction system and two climate-control cross-section drawings of the building showing how the measures adopted actually work.

On completing the course, you will be able to describe, and subsequently apply to your own work, the sustainability principles adopted in this contemporary architecture and the latest generation methods used to reduce the building’s environmental impact.

Learning Objectives
After reading this article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:

1. Identify the key characteristics of the 3M Italia Headquarters, the aims underpinning the project and how energy-saving strategies have been combined with formal design excellence.
2. Describe the materials used, with special focus on how sun screening and glazing are employed to create a comfort zone microclimate and cut energy consumption.
3. Illustrate, on the basis of the climatic sections and construction-detail drawings provided, how the 3M Italia Headquarters achieves energy savings and lowers harmful emissions.
4. Evaluate the importance of natural vegetation and inner courts to containing energy consummation and assess how interior spatial distribution, façade orientation and cladding and/or sun shading puts sustainability into practice.
