Course Description
The course provides clear information on an avant-garde, energy-efficient architectural project on the banks of the River Elbe in Hamburg, Germany. You are given a general overview of the project and a description of the technologies and materials employed, with special focus on the sustainable strategies adopted at the design and construction stages. The course comprises an explanatory text, many photographs, a series of technical drawings, sketches, construction detail drawings and a climate-control cross-section drawing.

On completion of the course, you will have more in-depth knowledge of sustainability issues in a specific contemporary-architecture context and the latest generation technologies used to achieve energy efficiency.

Learning Objectives
After reading this article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
  1. Identify the energy-efficient technologies adopted for the Unilever Headquarters project and explain how these achieve both high-level environmental sustainability and functional efficiency;
  2. Explain, on the basis of the climate-control cross-section drawing and construction detail drawings, how the sustainable design strategies achieve energy-saving benefits;
  3. Analyze the new materials used in the Unilever Headquarters for the structural frame, infills and sun-shading systems and how these combine occupant comfort with energy-saving benefits
