Experimentation and research are key drivers at staircase manufacturer Edilco. From the outset their offering has been innovative in both form and materials in the tireless quest to produce staircases that enhance the architectures that contain them. The Company’s decision in the nineties to enter the industrial-site market was a way of putting itself to the test. The loads and sizes of industrial products are completely different from the typical requirements of the private residential market for which Edilico’s patented reinforced-concrete staircases had been developed 20 years previously.
This was how “Grandi Opere” came about: staircases with a difference not only for their size but for their design excellence.
A striking example of aesthetic design is the extra-long yellow concrete spiral staircase with carpeted treads developed for the company Vei. The sheer height (15 m) is further emphasized by a diameter of only
120 cm. The staircase was commissioned after the building was completed when it became necessary to have additional vertical communication as well as the two existing hydraulic panoramic lifts. Edilco had extremely tight spaces to work with. The only possible site for the staircase was a 122 cm gap between two tubular profiles, which now serve as tie beams. The design had to be accurate to the millimetre, not only in terms of footprint but also in the calculation of risers and treads to ensure the staircase met each of the 5 floors at exactly the right spot. Not only was design accuracy important. Assembly was also key to ensuring such a narrow-width staircase would remain securely in place without warping or bending.
The staircase for the Polis Ceramiche office building in Modena was designed and installed at around the same time. This spiral staircase has a diameter of between 7 and 8 metres and connects two storeys. The modular frame is in satin-finish steel while the steps are in crystal glass. The whole staircase is suspended from the ceiling by tie beams making it an elastic structure. The effect is one of ineffable lightweight, despite its large width. This is further heightened by a ground floor water feature washed by a veil of flowing water.
